PinDark Privacy Policy

Effective date: 1 November 2026 (version 1.3.0) · Publisher: SortPin.com · Contact: hey@sortpin.com

This policy covers the browser extension "Dark Mode for Pinterest — Pink & Color Themes" on the Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons, and its Safari version "Dark Mode for Pinterest" on the Mac App Store. All three are also known as PinDark. It does not cover the SortPin extension or this website, which have their own privacy policy.

Short version

This extension collects nothing. It makes no network requests, has no accounts, no analytics, and no tracking of any kind. Your appearance settings and a few local UI flags stay in your browser.

What the extension does

This extension has a single purpose: to customize how the Pinterest website looks in the user's own browser — its colors, corner shape, decorations, and the layout of its pages (which interface elements are shown and how large a pin's image is). It does nothing else.

It runs only on Pinterest's own pages. Its optional Extras hide or resize parts of Pinterest's interface only in your browser, and only when you switch them on; they are all off until you do.

What we collect

Nothing. We do not collect, receive, store, transmit, sell or share any personal information, browsing history, page content, pins, boards, search queries, cookies, credentials or analytics.

We have no server that could receive your data. The extension's code makes no network requests of any kind: no telemetry, no remote configuration, no error reporting, no fonts, images or scripts loaded from third parties. Everything it needs ships inside the extension package, including its welcome page and its optional decorations, which are small drawings written into the extension's own stylesheet, so nothing is loaded for them either.

What is stored, and where

Your appearance preferences:

  • whether the theme is on or off
  • the appearance mode (dark, auto, timed or light)
  • your night schedule, if you use Timed mode (two times of day; Timed follows your device's clock and never uses your location)
  • which night look and which day look you picked
  • the corner shape (rounded or squared)
  • which optional Extras you switched on (for example Hover buttons or a decoration)
  • your custom color, if you chose one (a hex code and the palette computed from it)

These are stored in your browser's own extension storage. If you are signed in to your browser with sync turned on (for example Chrome sync or Firefox Sync), your browser, not us, may copy them to your other devices through your own account, the same way it syncs your other settings. On Safari they stay on your Mac.

A copy of these preferences is also kept in the Pinterest page's own localStorage, so the theme can be applied before the page paints; that is what prevents a white flash on load. Because that copy lives in the page's storage, Pinterest's own scripts could technically read it. It holds only the appearance choices listed above, including the Extras you switched on and the night schedule (two times of day), and the note about whether Pinterest's own dark theme is showing (below). It still holds nothing about you.

A few local UI flags (install date, dismissed notices, a count of look changes) stay on your device; nothing is sent anywhere. They exist only so the extension's own popup knows, for example, whether to show a "What's new" note or a one-time invitation to rate the extension. The count is a number only; it does not record which looks you chose or when. These flags are kept in the extension's local storage on this device and are not synced.

The extension also remembers, locally, whether Pinterest is currently showing its own dark theme. That decides what it does there: with Calico (which is Pinterest's own dark look) or a day look it leaves Pinterest's colors as they are (your corner shape and any Extras you switched on still apply), and with any other night look or your custom color it restyles it. The popup tells you which applies.

We never read any of this from anywhere but your own browser, because we have no way to.

The welcome page

Version 1.2.0 and later open a short welcome page once, right after you first install the extension. It never opens on updates. That page is part of the extension package itself: it is not a website, it loads nothing from the internet, and it contains no analytics. Settings you change on it are stored exactly like the ones you change in the toolbar popup.

Links you choose to open

The popup and the welcome page contain a few ordinary links: for example to Pinterest, to SortPin.com, and to this extension's page on your browser's add-on store so you can rate it. Nothing is loaded until you click one. A click opens that page in a normal browser tab, with no tracking parameters added by the extension, and that website's own privacy policy applies there (SortPin.com's website, for instance, uses analytics).

Permissions, and why each is needed

  • storage: to save the appearance settings, optional layout extras and a night schedule, and the UI flags listed above, so they persist between page loads.
  • sidePanel (Chrome only): to offer the same theme controls in Chrome's side panel as an alternative to the toolbar popup. Firefox shows them in its built-in sidebar, which needs no permission; Safari has no side panel.
  • Access to Pinterest's own domains: the stylesheet and the pre-paint class must run on the pages being themed. The extension runs only on Pinterest domains and requests no other host access. It is not active on any other website.

There are no other permissions. There is no tabs, no activeTab, no broad host access and no remotely hosted code. Opening the bundled welcome page needs no extra permission. On Firefox, the extension also declares to Mozilla that it collects no data.

Third parties

None. No advertising networks, no analytics providers, no A/B testing services, no third-party SDKs, no affiliate injection, no bandwidth sharing.

Children

The extension collects no data from anyone, including children.

Deleting your data

Removing the extension removes its settings and UI flags. You can also remove it at any time from your browser's extensions page. The small appearance copy in the Pinterest page's localStorage is cleared when you clear site data for Pinterest in your browser. Because nothing ever leaves your device, there is nothing for us to delete on our side and no request you need to send us.

Changes to this policy

If this ever changes, for example if a future feature required contacting a server, we will update this page, change the effective date above, and disclose the change prominently before it takes effect, in line with the browser stores' disclosure requirements.
